FaceboOk just rolled out another new feature..  And this in fact is something that was much awaited.. You can now edit comments on facebook.. Earlier facebook only allowed to edit within firs few seconds of posting the commenet by pressing delete and the comment would again appear in the textbox and you could edit the text and post it again..

But now you can edit comments on facebook in its truest sense.

To edit Comments on Facebook follow the below steps:

1. Hover over the comment an click on the Pencil icon Pencil Icon

Click on Pencil Icon

2. Click on Edit.

Click on Edit

3. Edit your comment and Press enter to save or Esc to cancel.

Press Enter or Esc to cancel

Edit comment and press Enter

Now The edited comment history would be visible to all who can see this comment.

Edit history

history

Since the edit history is visible to all you won’t be able to troll people like you used to do on goOgle buzz but still its a very useful feature.. And I feel FB came up with this very late..

Time travelling with Facebook Timeline

Facebook introduced TimeLine and I just can’t get enough of it.. Every minute I’m discovering some new feature hiddens ome where in the big bulk of changes..

The best one I found uptil now is Time Travelling.. Yes now Facebook enables you to travel in time.. and NO, not just to view your past sories/events/albums/videos.. you can even upload or add stories/events/albums/videos in you timeline in the past..

Now isn’t that awesome..

I was always fascinated with the concept of time travelling and parallel universe travelling.. though real time travelling is few years away,  facebook has enabled us to time travel in our digital life though.. and I soon expect them to release something for enabling us to travel to an alternate parallel universe..

So I was feeling very bad when I remembered I forgot to wish myself on my birthday this year.. but now with this awesome facebook timeline.. I can totally go back in the past and make up for that..

Time travelling with Facebook Timeline

And obviously you can also just travel through your timeline to relive your old memories that you’ve posted on faceboOk..

Insight: Facebook updates News Feed

I always say “Facebook is like girls.. Just when you think you understood.. It changes..” and in its constant changing facebook came up with another change today..
Last week we saw some major changes like allowing users to subscribe to public posts of other users (Like Twitter), The New Lists which totally reminded every one of the new goOgle+ circles..

If you missed them then read it here..
FB Smart Lists – GoOgle plus Circle thingy.. Now on FaceboOk

Facebook launches subscription.. much like “follow” on twitter

This time facebook updates the New Feed

Just got this notification saying..

All Your News is Now in One Place
Top stories since your last visit are at the top
Each top story is marked with a blue corner
Recent stories are below, in the order they were posted
Learn more about changes to News Feed.
Facebook updates News Feed
“Top stories marked with Blue corner” Now thats something..
Top stories that may interest you..

But how do they determin Top stories anyway?
There’s how…
We determine whether something is a top story based on lots of factors, including your relationship to the person who posted the story, how many comments and likes it got, what type of story it is, etc. For example, a friend’s status update that might not normally be a top story may become a top story after many other friends comment on it.

If you’ve been away for awhile, you’ll see the top stories that happened since your last visit at the top of News Feed.

If you see something that isn’t interesting in top stories, hover over the right side of the update in question, click the arrow  and click ‘Unmark as top story’ from the menu.

click ‘Unmark as top story’ from the menu” So does this means they are also recording feedbacks to better determin top stories patters or they just unmark it and do nothing to recognize our patterns..

Another intresting change is in the top bar..

Facebook Updates News Feed & Top Bar
So whats intresting in it??
Lemme walk you through it..
To notice the interesting part we’ll have to go through a series of small images of the top right of the Facebook top bar..
Before:
Facebook top bar before
After:
Facebook Top Bar NOwAnd on a TOTALLY UNRELATED NOTE:

GoOgle Top Bar
GoOgle Top Bar

IF you still didn’t get the interesting part then Gawd help ya!

Waiting for your awesome comments on this new News Feed Update by Facebook.. Start scribbling..

FB Smart Lists – GoOgle plus Circle thingy.. Now on FaceboOk

So this week apart from allowing users to subscribe each other (inspired from “follow” on twitter), faceboOk introduced one more feature – Smart Lists i.e is more or less like Circles from the goOgle+ minus the coOl JS animations that goOgle+ have..

So what are the Smart Lists?

Smart Lists automatically update themselves with coworkers, classmates, local friends and family members based on your friends’ profile info.
It provides a quick, optional way to organize friends so you can control what you see in your News Feed and post updates to specific people.
Your friends dont get to know if you add them to these three new lists:
Close Friends: Your best friends, who should show up more in News Feed.
Acquaintances: Friends who should show up less in News Feed.
Restricted: Friends who can only see posts and profile info you make public.
Smart List on Facebook
If you’ve been using the old Lame not so smart lists of FB then don’t worry you still have your old lists
If you previously created lists you can continue using them, merge them with your new lists or delete lists you don’t need any more.
With Smart Lists in action.. you can Share with Just the Right People
Post your updates straight to the friends and family who will find them most interesting, without worrying about bothering anyone else.
Share with just the right people
So what do you think of this new feature?? Do you think these Smart Lists are smart enough?? Share your precious thoughts in comments..

Osama Bin Laden is still alive!

On 1st May 2011 US President Barrack Obama declared to the world that they have killed Osama Bin Laden – Major culprit in 9/11 attacks and Leader and Founder of Alqaida, BUT he was not completely correct.

Osama Bin Laden Still Alive

Although he might have been successful in getting rid of the Alqaida terrorist osama hiding in Abottabad, Pakistan but the very same day new Osama(s) started to emeerge and terrorirze netizens and computer users all around the globe.
Within the few hours of declaration of his death the facebook feeds were flooded with posts like:
“Osama is dead, watch this exclusive CNN video which was censored by Obama Administration due to level of violence, a must watch. Leaked by Wikileaks.”
Links claiming to show footage of Osama being killed by US troops and Photoshopped images of him started doing rounds on people’s wall..
“Exclusive footage” that will “leave you speechless” has been leaked by “Wikileaks” and organisations like “CNN”
President Barack Obama has decided not to release any photos of the deceased Osama bin Laden, so any link claiming to show this photo or video should not be opened as they are nothing but spammy viruses.

Those accounts which fell prey of this spam attack automatically spam their friends’ wall too..

FBI also warned people to not to open thise unsolicited links even if they were posted to you by your friends.
In a statement FBI said:
Exercise caution when you receive e-mails that purport to show photos or videos of Usama bin Laden’s recent death. This content could be a virus that could damage your computer. This malicious software, or “malware,” can embed itself in computers and spread to users’ contact lists, thereby infecting the systems of associates, friends, and family members. These viruses are often programmed to steal your personally identifiable information.
The FBI further advised computer users to ensure that they have updated anti-virus protection to detect and handle such malicious softwares and to keep an eye for fraudulent messages that often feature spelling mistakes and poor grammar or nonstandard English.

Its not the first time that spammers have taken advantage of any such event and particularly the “Killing of Osama” have been rumoured many a times by the spammers on social networking sites and in emails.

Like with any other virus, the best ways to defend against the Osama virus is to make sure your antivirus software is up to date. Anti-Virus software companies continually update their databases to make sure that all new threats are addressed as they become known. If you don’t keep your antivirus up to date, you’re as good as with none at all.

Another way to stay protected is a two word mantra –  “goOgle it” rather than clicking on the doubted link.. thats what I do..
If its out ont the internet its surely on goOgle.

Also avoid granting Permissions to the Facebook applications that you don’t think they require.. Always read what permissions are you granting to any application before allowing granting them those permissions.

Facebook and other affected sites are working hard to get rid of the virus and making sure nothing like this happen again But its us Netizens who should stay alert at first place and not fall for these scams otherwise Osama will stay alive.. only this time he’ll be hiding inside our computer.

FaceboOk SMS notifications or SMS Spam: A Netizen’s Dilemma

faceboOk recently sent the following SMS to its users suggesting to de-register from the DND service if they want to continue receiving messages from faceboOk.
Your number is registered with Do Not Call Registry.
To receive Facebook SMS after Feb 1 you must de-register by texting STOP DND to 1909.
The Reason:

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently issued new regulations on the SMS industry in India.
Starting from Feb 1st 2011 every SMS service provider has to adhere to the new TRAI NCPR (National Consumer Preference Register (NCPR)) guidelines. Check www.nccptrai.gov.in for more details on new TRAI guidelines.
The primary objective is to ensure that consumers do not get commercial communications of promotional nature unless they have specifically opted for receiving them. No SMS provider is allowed to deliver SMS to NDNC/NCPR listed mobile numbers. TRAI New guidelines does not allow any service provider to use Numeric mobile number as the sender. So, starting from Feb 1 st, the new Message structure will be like -” TD- XXXXX” as the sender. These policies will also be applicable on internet-based mobile messaging websites.
What does this mean??

This means..
On a happy note..
  • No more SMSes about buying a SuperDuper Flat near Noida expressway or buying River view villas in Goa… and maybe no more SAUNA SLIM BELTS advertisement too.. 😛
On a note so happy note..
  • No more interactivity for facebook via text message.. You can’t like or comment on a friend’s status by replying to the message now, as SMS wont be coming from a real phone number as it used to come..
  • You can’t receive SMS notifications from faceboOk if you are registered on NDNC/NCPR
  • You can’t receive SMS notification between 9PM to 9AM even if you are not registered on NDNC/NCPR
  • You can’t send SMS from sites like way2sms with your own no. SMS would instead be sent from “TD- SNEHIL” like nicknames.
TRAI categorizes bulk SMS into two categories: Transactional and Promotional.
Transactional SMS is any message sent by Financial institution, Railways, Airlines or Educational institutions to it’s registered users. Everything else is termed as Promotional.
Telemarketer SMS and calls will be categorized in 7 categories namely:
  1. Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards;
  2. Real Estate;
  3. Education;
  4. Health;
  5. Consumer goods and automobiles;
  6. Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT;
  7. Tourism and Leisure.
Only Transactional messages will have full branded sender id (like TA-ICICIBANK) for others, there will be a 6 digit code (like TA-n12345 or TA-nABCDE), where n is the category of the message and further 5 digits are the unique code given by the telecom operator to each aggregator. All non-transactional messages will be compulsorily passed through the NDNC filter.
Obviously TRAI didn’t thought of these Internet based messaging services like faceboOk, goOgle SMS groups, messaging websites like way2sms, 160by2 etc before setting these guidelines..
TRAI guideline does not talk about these services, and since the operators are going to term any Bulk SMS as a promotional SMS.. so users are ultimately gonna loose the benefits of these sevices..
Although the policy was meant to be implemented from today (i.e 1 Feb) but I did received some messages from faceboOk from a normal numeric number.. so is it delayed??
