HowTo: use goOgle’s public DNS and why?

Its been more than an year since goOgle launched its public DNS in an effort to make the web faster.. but still I see many people are unaware of it.

So today I am writing this post to tell the advantages of using goOgle’s DNS and how to use them.

First you should know what is DNS heres a wiki link if you want to read in detail..

DNS serves as Internet’s phonebook.. It translates human-friendly names into IP addresses. For example, the domain name www.example.com translates to the addresses 192.0.32.10

Similarly when we type http://SnehilKhanor.com our browser resloves this name into IP address- 72.18.142.18

Sometimes even for a single page our browser needs to perform multiple DNS lookups affecting our speed of browsing the internet.

Usually our ISP provides us with an IP address of a DNS server.. when client program needs to perform a DNS lookup it asks the DNS Server at this IP address.

Sometimes ISP provided DNS services have many problems as ISPs don’t look after their DNS server much..

So if you are experiencing any issues regarding slow resolution of domain names then you can switch to goOgle’s DNS server for better speed and security another option is to use OPEN DNS but I prefer goOgle’s public DNS..

To use goOgle’s DNS change your DNS IP address to:

8.8.8.8
&
8.8.4.4

Click here to see How to change DNS Server IP address.

Benefits of using goOgle’s DNS:

All in All there are two main advantages of using goOgle’s DNS

  1. Speed
  2. Security

I don’t want repetition of content so heres the link of goOgle’s explanation on the performance and security benefits of using goOgle’s DNS (only if you want to read 😛 )

So I hope its pretty much every thing u need to know on an abstract level about DNS and goOgle’s DNS in particular..

This post was intended for non techie layman readers… if want to digg into the details.. goto this link

In a nutshell by using a faster DNS server like goOgle’s DNS server, your browsing speed can increase, security can be improved and you get the results you expect with absolutely no redirection.

So If you are experiencing DNS problems.. or loading speed of your webpages makes you feel that its slower than it should be or is not as fast as it should be then do try using goOgle’s DNS as me and many wise friends of mine..
