HowTo: Change your DNS Server settings (with Screenshots)

Steps for changing DNS settings varies from operating system to operating system (Windows, Mac or Linux) and device to device (computer, phone, or router).
I am giving general procedure here to Change DNS settings of Windows 7 with Screenshots. Steps maybe similar for other versions of windows but may vary greatly for different OS like Mac or Linux.
Changing your DNS server settings:

Step 1:

Open “Network and Sharing center”
1) via “Control Panel” : Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center
or
2) via clicking on network icon in Notification area
goto Network and sharing

goto Network and sharing

Step 2:

After opening “Network and Sharing center” click on “Change adapter settings” in left sidebar menu.
Click on the image to see the Full Size image
Change Adapter Settings

Step 3:

Right click on the network you wanna modify and click on “Properties”.
Click on the image to see the Full Size image
Right Click and choose properties

Right Click and choose properties

Step 4:
On the popped up window under “This connection uses the following items”, select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click “Properties”

Connection Properties

Connection Properties

Step 5:

Again on the new popped up window, Under the “General” tab select the “Use the following DNS server addresses” radio button, and enter your prefered DNS server address.
I prefer goOgle’s DNS as you can see in my settings..

Word of Caution:
Before you change your DNS settings, make sure to note down the current server addresses or settings. It is very important that you keep these numbers for backup purposes, in case you need to revert to them at any time.
I recoommend you take screen shot of your “TCP/IPv4 Properties” before you make any changes.. thats what I do.. 😉
Step 6:

Click OK
And Voila! Its done.. No ReStarting required 🙂

Example.com has changed

In his internet life.. one may many a times come across the domain name “http://example.com” in documentations, guides, tutorials..

But how many of you have ever done the effort of opening that website.. out of the curiosity and mainly the jeaolusy of so much free traffic ( 😛 ) I once paid a visit to it.. and thats what there was..

Old- Example.com

Old- Example.com

a simple text message saying..

You have reached this web page by typing “example.com”, “example.net”, or “example.org” into your web browser.

These domain names are reserved for use in documentation and are not available for registration. See RFC 2606, Section 3.

but just recently example.com changed and now on visiting example.com you see…

New-Example.com

New-Example.com

The example domains now issues a 302 redirect to a page on another domain http://www.iana.org/domains/example/

The message still pretty much means the same.. but the page has now beautified.. as opposed to earlier time’s naked message.. you can see for yourself here..

SO?? What’s the big deal??

The deal is very well pointed out by Paul Mutton in his blog HighSeverity that many people use this domain name in their codes for demonstration purposes and theres a very goOd chance that maybe some test code will be broken by this change.. although the chances are less as they were meant to be used only in documentation and not for any other purposes but still there are chances that can’t be neglected..

So wats your take on this?

goOgle hates faceboOk

Yesterday Digital Inspiration published a post about an easter egg in goOgle’s translation tool..

If you write “WE REALLY HATE THIS COMPANY” and translate it in “Japenese” the translation will have “FACEBOOK” in it 😀

You can see the screenshot below..

goOgle hates faceboOk

goOgle hates faceboOk

and not only for this sentence.. almost in every sentence with HATE in it “faceboOk” was there in the translation 😀

but seems like goOgle caught the buzz going on about this and corrected the translation as it was not there this morning..

goOgle vs faceboOk

who ever at the goOgle’s office was behind this is either gonna get promoted or fired (lesser chances) 😀

Insight: “faceboOk email” aka faceboOk’s “modern messaging system” Part – II

Read: Insight: “faceboOk email” aka faceboOk’s “modern messaging system” Part – I here..

I always used to think if I ever met Mark Zuckerberg i’ll tell him how faceboOk chat sucks and how he could improve messaging experience by adding few simple features like forwarding conversations, allowing addition of people to the threads of messages and allowing to save chat conversations.. But all this was Pre – faceeboOk’s Modern Messaging System time period. Now I use facebook chats as my primary mode of chatting all thanx to the “Modern Messaging System” and partly to “Rockmelt Browser” .. ‘ll write about Rockmelt later..

As faceboOk’s “modern messaging system” got it all.. Herez a list of all the modern features that faceboOk’s Modern Messaging System sports..

First of all the best ones..

Add people to the conversation:

You can now add people to the conversation at any point of time and also leave any conversation thread when it become UNinteresting 😛

Mark Zuckerberg – faceboOk CoFounder’s FaceboOk Fan Page Hacked

Yup.. you read it right… Mark Zuckerberg’s faceboOk fan Page was hacked .. Zuckerberg tasted his own medicine and IT WAS BITTER 😀

Yesterday there was a status update on Mark Zuckerberg’s Fan Page followed by 2,500,000 fans which i took screenshot of for a different reason and it turned out I’m writing this post for a whole different reason 😀

Herez a screenshot of the status update..

Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Page Hackedwhich reads..

Let the hacking begin: If facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn’t Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a ‘social business’ the way Nobel Price winner Muhammad Yunus described it? http://bit.ly/fs6rT3 What do you think? #hackercup2011

I took the screen shot to share with you guys the “typo” by zuckerberg in the spelling of “The Nobel Prize” which he wrote as “Nobel Price” 😀

But it turns out It wasn’t the Zuckerberg who updated this status.. :O

His page was hacked by someone.. interestingly the update started with “Let The Hacking begin” a phrase used by Jesse Eisenberg potraying Mark Zuckerberg in the movie “The Social Network” (Haven’t watched it?? I HATE YOU! … really.. you dont deserve my love..)

FaceboOk have now taken down the post.

The hacker also attached a link with the status to the wikipedia page of “Social Business

A social business is a non-loss, non-dividend company designed to address a social objective. The profits are used to expand the company’s reach and improve the product/service. This model has grown from the work of Muhammad Yunus and others.

The Exclusive:
Another interesting thing that i noted was this..
The Shortened URL on hitting takes you to the url:

If we break the url.. we see two vairables..

which on Decoding yields

Which is a photo of the “Hackers Cup”

Strange how none of the biggie biggie Tech Sites which covered this news skipped this part..

YahoO! Fast Pass – Use your faceboOk and goOgle ID to login to yahoO

I just noticed one thing that all the three companies have a substring of two consecutive oO’s in them. 😛 but that’s not what this post is about..
Starting from this week yahoO began allowing the users to log in to its services without signing into yahoO account isnstead you can use your faceboOk and goOgle ID to do so..
Yahoo! Fast Pass -Login with Facebook or Google ID

Yahoo! Fast Pass -Login with Facebook or Google ID

It simply means you dont have to have a yahoO account to access yahoO mail, yahoO answers, flickr, comment on articles.. and no. of other services.. yahoO delivers same experience no matter you are logged in with yahoO, faceboOk or goOgle ID.
Clearly the move is to increase the no. of visitors to its network.
So from now onwards if you are logged into either of goOgle or faceboOk’s network. you dont have to sign into yahoo and just need to press one single button to login to yahoO newtork.
Seems like yahoO is now following- “ID me kya rakha hai bande aane chaie” strategy 😀
Below are the sequence of Screenshots to be followed to sign into yahoO using faceboOk or goOgle ID.
On first run yahoo associates your faceboOk and goOgle account with your new or some existing yahoO ID.
In case of goOgle when you press “Sign in with goOgle” button the following window appears..
Yahoo! Fast Pass -Login with Facebook or Google ID
After you click on allow button a form will appear..
Yahoo! Fast Pass -Login with Facebook or Google IDHere you’ll have to select a yahoo ID for yourself.. although this part was not shown in the yahoO’s official post‘s video maybe they add it later or god knows what..
Once you’re done you will receive a mail in your goOgle’s ID confirming your connection.

Yahoo! Fast Pass -Login with Facebook or Google ID

And once setup you can thereafter always sign in into yahoO network with just one click..
Similarly for faceboOk you need to give yahoo the permission to access your faceboOk account and once you’ve done it.. you can sign in to yahoO by just clicking on “sign in with faceboOk” button.
Yahoo! Fast Pass -Login with Facebook or Google ID
So what do you have to say about the openness of yahoO! Do Share your views in comments section.. 🙂

Insight: “faceboOk email” aka faceboOk’s “modern messaging system” Part – I

Last week I got early acceess to faceboOk’s new “Modern Messaging System” which some people also call “The faceboOk email” or “The gmail Killer” and am already a big fan of it..
In this and the next post I’ll share with you my “faceboOk’s modern messaging” experience with detailed ScreenShots..

FaceboOk CoFounder and CEO – Mark Zuckerberg also calls it “Next Generation Messaging”

The three main elements of the “modern messaging system” are:

Messages & Other

Messages & Other

  1. Seamless Messaging
Communication across all the different ways people like to message, including but not limited to email.
  2. Conversation History
A record of all your contacts with people all in one place.
  3. Social Inbox
It prioritizes messages from your contacts.
Social Inbox will separate messages into three folders:

    • Messages
    • Other
    • Junk

Your social graph will determine what gets sorted in the messages folder and what in other.
Links for folders “Messages” and “Other” are placed in the left side bar where as to go to spam folder goto “Other” folder and click the Junk link at the bottom (rightly placed at the postion where it deserves to be :P)

    Junk Folder

    Junk Folder

Now to Compose a new message click on the “New Message” button on the top right corner of your Message page.

New Message

A pop up window as in the screenshot below will appear where you can Enter Name of the friend you want to message or Email ID you want to mailto or both.

eMail Message and text

eMail Message and text

One important thing to notice in this is that there is no field for entering “Subject” :O

In this dialog you have many other new options too… like:
Attach A file:

Attach a File

Attach a File

Take a picture or video:

Take a picture or video

Take a picture or video

Also send as text message

Also Send as text message

Also Send as text message

Now we press the “Send” button and its done..

Now lets check the yahoo mail inbox (I’ve Configured my [email protected] ‘s mail to come in yahoo’s inbox)
And there it is..

Mail From facebook to yahoo

Mail From facebook to yahoo

And also as i sent it to myself on faceboOk too theres one message in my faceboOk inbox too..

faceboOk Social Inbox

faceboOk Social Inbox

The mail from facebook just came into the yahoo mailbox like any other mail with subject: “Conversation with Snehil Websthal Khanor”

Yahoo mail inbox

Yahoo mail inbox

If we look at the sender of the mail.. we’ll se it came from “[email protected]

Now lets try replying to the mail and see wat happens..

Reply from yahoo mail to facebook mail

Reply from yahoo mail to facebook mail

and its sent..

eMail sent to user@facebook.com

eMail sent to [email protected]

and here it comes in my facebook’s Social inbox

FaceboOk Social Inbox

FaceboOk Social Inbox

FaceboOk's Social inbox

FaceboOk's Social inbox

So now I have a mail in my faceboOk’s social inbox which looks just like ordinary mail.. notice the highlighted portion on the image.. see the icon on the right side.. this is what faceboOk uses to distinguish between “Saved Chats”, “eMails” and “messages” we’ll later see the icons for “Saved chats” and “Messages”.

FaceboOk Social inbox

FaceboOk Social inbox

FaceboOk's Social Inbox

FaceboOk's Social Inbox

Now lets try sending and receiving some attachment files… so here I attach and send a “rar” file as an attachment.

attachments.faceboOk.com

attachments.faceboOk.com

Attach rar file via faceboOk mail

Attach rar file via faceboOk mail

And its sent.. below is the screen shot from the yahoo’s inbox.. this means you can send just any file by archiving it as .rar file before sending..

Attach rar file via faceboOk mail

Attach rar file via faceboOk mail

now lets try receiving attachments in the social inbox…

Receive Attachments

Receive Attachments in faceboOk mail

and here I receive the pdf file as an attachment in my faceboOk’s social inbox..

Receive Attachments in faceboOk mail

Receive Attachments in faceboOk mail

So this was basically the eMail part of the faceboOk’s “modern messaging system“. Insight of other features of “modern messaging system” would be posted in the next post “Insight: ‘faceboOk email’ aka faceboOk’s ‘modern messaging system’ Part – II” soon. Subscribe to My blog’s feed or like the faceboOk page [ both options are given in Right sidebar] to get notifiaction of my next post.. 🙂

All you need to know about – Mobile Number Portability

Mobile Number Portability

After a long delay of 3 years Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has finally came to reality today (20 jan 2011) . Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will finally be available all over India from 20th Jan 2011.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) allows the subscriber to change his/her Service Provider without changing his/her mobile number. The number gets ported to the new provider. Subscriber can even switch from GSM to CDMA and vice versa and also can change from Prepaid to Postpaid and vice versa but within his circle only as inter-circle portability has not been implemented yet.

MNP Service Areas

To Port:

  • SEND: PORT <space> mobileNumber to 1900
    e.g. PORT 9873000000 to 1900
This is a unique number that will be maintained along with your mobile number in the master database managed by a third party firm. For zone I, Syniverse has been appointed with the MNP and related issues while for zone II, it is Telcordia.
  • You will get back a unique Porting code with expiry date
  • Approach the Service provider you want to opt for with this unique code before the expiry time of the code.
Carry your address and ID proof/ photograph/ application form.
You’ll get a new SIM card for your new connection.
Apart from Retention of number everything is same as getting a new connection.
  • The new operaor will then contact existing operator and ask for permission and if approved will text you a Date and time mentioning when your phone will go through no-service period while porting.
  • On the set date and time the existing operator will disconnect the number and new operator will claim it. MNP would mantain a central database.
  • While porting your phone will be out of use for couple of hours between 12Am and 5Am.

Cost of porting: Rs 19/-

Reasons to switch mobile service providers

Reasons to switch mobile service providers

Now a few questions which I’m sure would be popping in your head..

How frequently can I Switch among Service Providers?
Once switched you can’t switch again for atleast 90 days. So choose wisely and don’t end up with the some provider even worse than the previous one.

Will my Prepaid balance be carried forward to the new operator?
NO. So make sure you use all of it before the porting time. 😛

How much time the whole process would take?
Seven working days. Fifteen in case of J&K , North East.

Now how will I know if the number I’m calling is of which particular network and if Free minutes would be applicable or not?
Beats me. Every thing has its own pros and cons.. and this is one of the cons.

So all in all its a great power put in the hands of user which will ultimately benefit the user and wil initiate healty competetions among service providers.

Speacial thanx to Anuj for sighting a little mistake in the post.. and “ye line mujhse likhwai gai hai” 😛

How to get Facebook mail id like [email protected]

In recent past FaceboOk launched “faceboOk messages” a new messaging system which some people are also referring to as faceboOk mail as faceboOk is providing addresses like [email protected] but Mark Zuckerberg (CoFounder and CEO) made it clear during the launch that it is not an email.
“It’s true that people will be able to have an @facebook.com email addresses, but it’s not email.”
-Mark Zuckerberg
facebook messaging

facebook messaging

Some people are also calling it as the “gmail killer“. The codename for the project is “Project TITAN” and it combines services like Instant Messaging, eMail, text messaging and regular messaging.
It also centralizes all your chats and long awaited “forward” feature in the messaging system is also finally here. It also allows to attach and send files and theres also an option to send a copy of the mail/message you are sending to the user as a text message too.
sendAsTextMessage
To activate “faceboOk messaging” you’ll have to request an invite and wait for your turn to get it.
To request an invite goto “FACEBOOK MESSAGING INVITATION PAGE” and register yourself in the queue for getting facebook mail id.

request Faceebook Mail Invitation

Your mail id would be same as your username for e.g if your profile page is http://facebook.com/snehilkhanor your mail id would be [email protected]
If you dont have your username then get it from “FACEBOOK USERNAME PAGE
When I got “faceboOk messaging” last week I also got few invites to invite people from my friend list but when I invited them they didnt actually got the access to “faceboOk messaging” instead they were enqueued in the invitation list. Strange game faceboOk showed there playing “Hard to get”.
Facebook Mail Invite
I’ll post a detailed review of new “faceboOk messaging” system later today or tommorow.
I hope you guys also get new “faceboOk messaging” soon as it is of no utility to me until no one else in my friend list have it.
Adieu untill next time 😉
